Culture& and Sotheby’s Institute of Art today announce a groundbreaking partnership to accelerate diversity in the art world through education. Commencing from September 2023, the Culture& and Sotheby’s Institute of Art Cultural Leaders Programme – the first of its kind in the contemporary art world in the UK – is designed to empower and nurture the next generation of diverse leaders.
Through this partnership, the Cultural Leaders Programme will offer three fully-funded scholarships per year from 2023/24 to 2025/26 to promising students from under-represented communities to pursue one of the Institute’s prestigious one-year, full-time Master’s programmes:
The programme will allow these promising young professionals from diverse backgrounds with leadership potential to study full-time and receive a London Living Wage bursary for their living expenses.
The selected students will have access to the full range of Sotheby’s Institute of Art services to support student learning and wellbeing, including high levels of teaching time, personal tutors, specialist library and research facilities, expert career service support, counselling and much more. Additionally, students will receive tailored mentoring and networking opportunities, drawing on both Culture&’s and Sotheby’s Institute’s networks of professional and social support.

We are looking for the most promising students, who possess leadership potential, and will thrive within the contemporary art and commercial art world. All British permanent residents are eligible to apply. We particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in our student body. These include British people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.
Applications are now closed

Culture& x Sotheby’s Institute of Art Cultural Leaders Programme
Diversifying the future leadership of the art world through education
The Cultural Leaders Programme, the first of its kind in the UK, brings together the considerable experience and cultural networks of the two organisations.
Sotheby’s Institute of Art has committed to a 100% fee waiver for three scholarships over a three-year period (nine students in total) to enable the scholars to pursue one of the Institute’s prestigious one-year, full-time Master’s programmes: the MA in Contemporary Art; the MA in Art Business; or the MA in Fine and Decorative Art and Design.
In addition, each scholar will receive a bursary to cover the cost of living in London so that those selected for the programme can fully focus on the educational experience and benefit from all this opportunity has to offer.
Culture& x Sotheby’s Institute of Art are currently looking for like-minded individuals, foundations and companies who share our vision for creating change in the art world and believe in the necessity of this initiative to help provide funding for cost of living bursaries for the selected Cultural Leaders.
By fully covering the cost of living in London, these bursaries will relieve the burden of loans or necessity to work during their studies, thereby enabling these scholars to fully focus on their educational experience and benefit from all the programme has to offer.
