New Museum School Advanced Programme Phase 2

Latest News

We are launching the third iteration of the New Museum School and its second Advanced Programme (NMSAP). We are implementing feedback from independent evaluation and the recommendations of the Art Fund report ‘It’s About Handing Over Power’ (Museum X and Culture&, 2022). Both reports say that bringing about sustained change in the museum workforce will take time and graduates will need carefully structured support as well as new skills and professional development.

We are seeking follow-on funding to enable us to launch Phase 2 of the New Museum School Advanced Programme to build on the significant traction that the Programme has gained in the heritage sector and the potential of the 45 students and graduates so far.

Culture& is ideally positioned in a unique partnership with the University of Leicester’s renowned Research Centre for Museums and Galleries, plus over twenty leading heritage organisations from across the UK, and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Marstine Family Foundation and the Art Fund. The partnerships combine a wide range of sector professionals, all of whom have an appetite for inclusive transformational change.

The enhanced New Museum School Advanced Programme Phase 2 is a bold, large-scale, sustained intervention to tackle systemic inequality in our museum sector and contribute to a fairer and more equitable future. New Museum School Advanced Programme Phase 2 will continue to nurture a critical mass of museum professionals (120 over both phases) alongside support for participating museums. We want to drive inclusive organisational change and provide structured mentoring and facilitation of peer-to-peer support networks to enable New Museum School Advanced Programme graduates to thrive over the lifetime of their careers. Independent longitudinal evaluation will gather data on graduates’ career trajectories to track the project’s impact over time.

Student Testimonials

*Undertaking studies in Socially Engaged Practice at this stage in my career and life is both interesting and useful. I have been able to bring many decades of experience to my study; this includes exploring what I have done in greater depth using theoretical frameworks that I previously knew little about, and by locating them within a range of other sector and societal contexts. The most rewarding aspect though is the rare opportunity to step back and critically review my practice in a stimulating envi-ronment. This period of study will undoubtedly shape the next chapters of my career".
"I feel significantly more confident and prepared to excel in the museum sector. The course has provided me with a robust skill set, enabling me to critically analyse museum operations, contribute innovative ideas, and collaborate effectively with colleagues. This new-found confidence has also translated into my academic work, as I am now able to approach my studies with a deeper understanding of the field. I look forward in continuing to grow in this field. Thank you once again for your outstanding course and your unwavering support".
"It has been inspiring to be a part of the group of students and organisations who make up this programme, and motivating to see how our vision for a more welcoming and inclusive museum and gallery sector aligns. When I see the work that everyone in this programme is doing, I have hope for the future of change in the sector. I will continue to use what I have learnt on this programme as my career de-velops, but more importantly, this programme has inspired my socially-engaged practice and reminded me of the power of research for change in the sector.
