Britain in the 70s and 80s was rumbling with a Black community fighting for change. And while the spoken word of protest was crucial in working to achieve this, the printed word also played a role in galvanising and establishing freedom movements.

In this podcast, Faustina Yawson, New Museum School trainee at London Metropolitan Archives, City of London, explores the link between publications and Black activism at the time. Using the Huntley Archives (LMA/4462, LMA/4463) to discuss how Black magazines, pamphlets and newspapers, worked to bring the Black community together and challenge Britain’s racism.

This ignited research about Khan’s life and her role as an Hon. Assistant Section Officer for the Special Operations Executive.

In this podcast Denise discusses a recent art installation at Pitzhanger by interdisciplinary artist, Es Devlin. Devlin is known for her striking installations within art and stage design for theatre and music. She has designed stages for significant contemporary musicians such as ‘Beyoncé’, ‘Kanye West’, ‘The Weeknd’, ‘Lorde’, and many more.

‘Memory Palace’ filled the gallery with a personal atlas of the evolution of thought; a vast chronological landscape mapping pivotal shifts in human perspectives over millennia.

Chinese porcelain and ceramics: vessels that represent movement, exchange and connection. The Museum of Croydon contains a collection of over 200 Chinese ceramics and porcelain, dating from as early as the Han dynasty, all way through to the Qing dynasty. The collection is named after a gentleman called Raymond Riesco. How did it find its way to Croydon?

Daisy Chan is a New Museum School trainee based at the Museum of Croydon.
